About Therapy Advisor
Most people don’t find effective therapy quickly. In fact, research shows that the average delay between the onset of mental health symptoms and the start of professional treatment is 11 years.
Eleven years of struggling, searching, and often trying therapies that don’t work — not because effective treatments don’t exist, but because most people have no reliable way to know what works, what doesn’t, and how to find someone who actually practices it.
I built Therapy Advisor to change that.
What is Therapy Advisor?
Therapy Advisor exists to close the gap between what the research says works and what most people actually know when they walk into a therapist’s office.
Every article, guide, and resource on this site is grounded in peer-reviewed research and written from real clinical experience. There is no pseudoscience here. No wellness trends. No financial incentive to recommend anything that hasn’t been rigorously studied.
Just honest, evidence-based information — because you deserve to know what works before you spend another year finding out what doesn’t.
Larson Sholander, PhD, LP
I’m a licensed clinical psychologist in the state of Michigan. You can find my academic, training, and vocational background here. I started Therapy Advisor after seeing one person after another come through my office doors who had been misdiagnosed or received unhelpful or even harmful therapy for years with little to no improvement. Part of the problem is that people don’t know what to look for or even how to begin their search. The other part of the problem is that takes an average of 17 years for evidence-based practice (EBP), including effective therapy treatment, to be incorporated into everyday clinical practice. I established Therapy Advisor to close the gap and help both lay people and clinicians know where to turn to for effective treatment.
